Band
Started out of Lucas’ bedroom demos in November 2010, Oh So Quiet formed into a full band by February 2011. The music had unintentionally become acoustical, his bedroom being too small for amps and drum kits. Originating from Argentina, Spain, England and somehow Iran or Russia, the band's influences are vast and rich.
Lucas and Malena Zavala were born in Argentina in 1989 and 1993. They grew up in a very creative environment with a family full of architects, fine artists and musicians. Their earliest memories of music were watching their grandparents play the piano together and listening to their Beatles vinyl collection. At the age of 7 and 3, their parents decided to move to Hertfordshire, England. As a child Lucas was more into drawing and painting whilst Malena began with playing the Violin.
At the age of 16 Lucas was given John Lennon's 'acoustic' album by his grandmother and became the catalyst for his path in Music and learned the guitar. Malena began playing violin at the age of 6 after she was handed down a Violin originally owned by their great-grandfather, who was a professional first violinist in Argentina. Although she abandoned the instrument by 13, she was already singing passionately and at 15 began practicing the guitar which she learned rather quickly.
The influences to the writing had largely been derived from Latin folk and alternative Indie; from Silvio Rodriguez, Devendra Banhart to Arcade Fire and Beirut. In September 2010 he spent all of his extra student loan on recording equipment to make a bedroom studio. Malena liked the songs created in this time and agreed to add backing vocals. Realising that Malena's presence worked perfectly, Oh So Quiet was born. They decided to find other students to play the rest of the instruments with them live.
The first member to join (in December 2010) was Axel Martinez, a new bass student at Academy of Contemporary Music, also attended by Lucas and Malena. His Hispanic background and musical preferences was the perfect fit for Oh So Quiet. In addition, Lucas' friend and classmate Josh Halliday, from Milton Keynes, was helpful in bringing his good collection of instruments with an ability to play them all. A short time after in February 2011, in came Nick Wallis, Anglo-Iranian from London, who prior to ACM, had been living in Russia for 5 years whenever he wasn't at Boarding school. His influences, from the Beatles to Paco de Lucia also and ability on rhythm guitar and piano, was important to Oh So Quiet. Later that year at the end of June 2011 Nick decided to leave the band to go and study in Durham. A few months later Lucas decided it was time to add drums into the sound and that is when they met Benito Pflueger. Benito is from Frankfurt Germany. His tasteful drumming kept the live sound tight and colourful and thus giving Oh So Quiet depth.
